This are great vacation Hales (little houses) you can rent by the day or the week. They offer a delicious breakfast of local fruits and baked goodies in the Tiki Lounge pictured here.
Other than breakfast you are on your own. Go here for the beautiful setting, the privacy and if you want to have a kitchen. John the owner is very pleasant but you will not see much of him. He works hard at making sure everything is ready and pleasant for you when you arrive so that it is not necessary to bother you during your stay. For the most part this works out beautifully.
Each of the Hales have a kitchen, bath and at least one bedroom.
Great views, lovely interesting and unique independent suites. An amzing pond and easy access to a black pebble beach. This cottage is located right along (almost literally) Highway 31 a little ways past Hâna near Kipahulu. Kipahulu is where the Pools of ‘Ohe‘o are located. Our three nights at this central location allowed us plenty of time to explore many of the sights along the Hâna Hwy that you could not see in the typical whirlwind tour when you drive from the other side of Maui to day-visit.
We rented this wonderful, unassuming, single-bedroom house for three nights. Its best feature is its commanding view of the ‘Alenuihaha Channel and the Pacific Ocean from its large lanai. ***UPDATE 10-12-07: This place is no longer available for rent. :( ***
Its elevation is a couple hundred feet (approx. 60m) above the ocean with nothing but open pastureland stretching about one-quarter mile (approx. 400m) down to the jagged rocks along the coast. You are close enough to the water that you can still hear the crashing surf which was especially evident at night when most all else was quiet. "Most" excludes the gekos and the cows, however, they were not to the point of annoyance. Gekos emit a loud, short, chirpish-groan. One evening there were over 30 gekos on the lanai's walls and ceiling sounding off. As for the cows, one night a wild bull had come down from the mountains and was courting the ladies in the pasture. He was quite vocal.
It is only about 30 miles (128km) across the channel to the Big Island so you can get a glimpse of the shadowy outlines of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa over there as long as there is not much vog coming from Kilauea during the day. We saw them only once at dawn. They were hazed over the rest of the time. However, at night, we still managed to see the faint glimmer of lights along their slopes.
Everyday was perfect with no rain during our stay. Because of its location, rain forms and falls further inland. The real treat was sitting on the lanai watching the sunrise to the left and the sunsets to the right and slightly behind the island. It was like this lanai was the front-row, center-stage seats for Mother Nature’s biggest and best show. Since the selection of restaurants is very slim in Hâna, we cooked our own and ate every night on our lanai enjoying the cool ocean breeze, the sound of the not-too-distant surf, the gekos sounding, and the cows mooing.
In regards to the Hâna Hwy being right out front of the house: We never even noticed it since we were gone all day and there are very few cars on this road at night. The road in this section, because it is so narrow it is almost a single lane, forces cars to slow down therefore making them much less noticeable.
The real reward of this place was that it provided the best whale watching experience ever (see Travelogue). We had the perfect front-row seats. Being about a half-mile (approx. 800m) from the whales, we could still clearly hear the slap of their tails and bodies on the water. This magnificent Hotel is done in a calming japanese style. The owners have taken great pains to make it an exceptional hotel.

Waianapanapa State Park, Glistening Water.
We spent the majority of our visit to Maui with friends who live in Kula, a very beautiful town nestled in the mountains. The house was set at an elevation of 3500 ft. and over looked the northern and southern shore...amazingly beautiful! We did however take the opportunity to camp on Maui which when we go back we will take more advantage of! There are some areas around the island where you can pitch a tent on a sandy beach and wake to the sounds of the crashing waves or while visiting Hana you could stay in a tent or rent a cabin for $45 a night with all the ammenities! This is the way to go if you want to save on money. The great benefit is the fact that the cabins are located in the lush hills of Hana at Waianapanapa State Park. The park is a 2-3 or more drive from the airport depending on the traffic but it's well worth the ride, the infamous Road to Hana is a delight. Hana is on the remote side of the island, things happen slowly here but there is so much of nature to explore that you would be busy for days! The only downside to staying here would be the long drive into town and other areas of the island. When we go again I think we will camp here for a few days and then head to other areas of the island.

Cabin - $45 a night
If you are only spending one night and get there after the office closes you won't have to pay. We were told we needed to get a permit from Lahaina, they don't sell them at the campground so check into that before you go...it's not a quick drive back to town!
If you use a tent there are outside showers and toilets available, they are clean but only cold water showers! If you stay in a Cabin you are provided everything, bath, shower, toilet, bedding, pots and pans, dishes...it is full of ammenities.

Kaanapali - this is a resort type community with golfing and is very popular...very beautiful and close to everything.
Not sure on the price because we didn't stay there but after talking with some people it's @ $150-200 a night. Leave a Comment Theme: OtherComparison: about average

We did not stay here but we were told by some locals a little story you may want to think about before you stay here. The Ritz is known to be haunted...not something you will read about on their marketing material. It was built on an ancient burial ground, when they brought in bull dozers to dig the holes they dug up local hawaiians. I am NOT in anyway making light of this, as you can imagine the local people were horrified by what was happening to their ancesters and rightfully so. I merely wanted to pass along the information because personally, just knowing what they did...I wouldn't stay there. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Hale Hâna Bay sits on a low bluff directly on Hâna Bay. As a matter of fact, peeking through an opening in the trees, you can see the tip of the pier at Hâna Bay from the back lanai.
This property is offered by Hâna Maui Travel, which is the same company that we rented Koali Ranch Cottage (a separate tip) from last year. Both times have been an ease dealing with them.
This old house sits within a residential area that has mostly been converted to rentals of one sort or another. Houses, cottages, or condos, there are plenty to choose from in this locale. There's even a motel-like house with private rooms and private or shared baths called "Joe's Place" (a separate tip).
There is no air conditioning here. The tradewinds keep it cool enough. But if you live in a northern region and find that 75-80 degrees Fahrenheit to be too hot, you may find it a little uncomfortable staying here.
We loved the location of this house. We loved the look and feel of this elevated frame house and all the assocciated squeaks it brings. We loved the cool ocean breeze that swepth softly and smoothly through. We loved the view of Hâna Bay and of the sunrises from the back lanai. We loved the large picture window with the view of the backyard and Bay. We loved the fact that we were within easy walking distance to Hasegawa's and Hâna Bay.
However, there was one overriding aspect that was really annoying: the ants.
With the slightest drop of sweet liquid on the counter or sprinkling of crumbs, a line of ants seemed to come out to investigate. Because of this, we had to keep all foods in the refrigerator, whether they required refrigeration or not. That was one place those pesky critters did not venture. Leave a Comment

We were looking for a place to "get away from it all" after our wedding. Hotel Hana Maui was the perfect resort-no T.V., clock radio, or air conditioning-just beautiful weather and scenery around us. Even though the resort doesn't have a beach directly on the property, the Red Sand Beach is a short walk away. Also, Koki Beach and Hamoa Beach are within a 3-minute drive from Hotel Hana Maui. We stayed in an Oceanview Sea Ranch Cottage with spectacular views of the ocean and of the horse ranch next to the resort. The restaurant choices weren't plentiful, but we definitely enjoyed the large breakfasts included in our package. We recommend bringing along the book "Maui Revealed." It has an entire section on Hana's vast hidden treasures. The resort also has several included activities, such as tennis, croquet, and golf, that we thoroughly enjoyed. We loved Hotel Hana Maui so much that we named our new puppy "Hana" after our memorable honeymoon spot.
