 | Kourou Reviews | Tips 1 - 2 of 2 | | Located right on Kourou beach, the hotel Des Roches is possibly the best placed hotel in Kourou, many of the rooms overlook the beach and benefit from a constant sea breeze, the restaurant is one of the better in the town, quality wise, though quite pricey. The rooms are fairly large, are supplied with (sometimes temperamental) satellite television and is well up to standard, the reception staff (try, and only recently to) speak English, and the swimming pool was updated in 2004 and is in very good condition. The down or up side to all this is that the only thing the hotel is close to is the beach and the nautical club, if you want to go to any other restaurants you need to jump in your car and drive for about 5 minutes till you get to the bourg or other parts of Kourou where there is life, not too bad, but if you want to drink and your not into the DUI thing, you need mates or a taxi. (a number for which you could probably get fm reception).
If you're looking to book a room here to come and see an Ariane 5 launch, book very early, as this hotel and the Mercure and Atlantis get full up around these times. Location on the beach is great, depending on how clean the sea water is, the restaurants at night and for breakfast are both clean and the food is good. The ever presence of the Gendarme (French Military Police) can be quite reassuring, if you're into military types. There is an 'overflow' part to the hotel called 'La Mangue' which is basically on the other side of the hotel car park, this isn't as nice as the main hotel, so if you get asked if you'd prefer to go there, don't say yes. The Hotel Gros Bec is the cheapest hotel in Kourou, though its more like an aparment than a hotel. Each room has 2 floors with a a fully equipped kitchenette, sofa and TV on the ground floor and the en-suite bedroom on the 1st floor. Car parking is in a secure car park. Rooms currently cost 65 euros a night. The hotel doesn't have a restaurant but is located about 3 minutes walk from the new mexican restaurant in town and about the 2 minutes from a fairly decent Brazilian restaurant La Copacabana, as well as being about 4 minutes from the main street of the old town where there is an abundance of nightlife and bars and restaurants, well, an abundance for French Guiana anyway. On a minus side, the hotel is located next to one of the tidal canals that runs through Kourou, so you'll get mosquitoes (but not too bad as most of the water moves), you'll also need to be a bit careful going out at night as there is crime around the bourg area.
It's the cheapest hotel in Kourou, up to 50% cheaper than the other hotels in town, self sufficient so you shouldn't get cabin fever if you're here for a while. It's pretty close to the bourg, car parking is secure. It's a pretty good option if you don't want to stay in a bulk standard hotel room for a month+.
