Battle Harbour Off the Beaten Path Tips by jamiesno

Battle Harbour was certainly the fishing capital of Labrador where the main activity occured but there are many other abondoned communities along the coast line in southern Labrador.

Here in this picture is Trap Cove. On the right hand side of the picture on top of the hill, the white colored house is owned by the Snook family.

It has a great view of this deep harbour. You can actually hike to Trap Cove from Battle Harbour which is also a recommended activity.

Another deserted fishing community is Mathews Cove. It is also often referred to as "Maddie's Cove".

It is just a 5 minute walk from Trap Cove or a short boat ride over into the next harbour. Both communities one time shared the same school.

Today there are some homes that are still maintained as summer cottages. This makes another great side excersion and can be easily hiked from Battle Harbour.

During the day of my visit in July there were two impressive hawks flying above and making us aware of there presence.

Cape Charles is another abandoned community just a few kilometers away by boat from Battle Harbour.

There is a little more infrastructure still standing in Cape Charles with a church, old school, some private residents continue to keep their cottages up.

The Battle Harbour Historic Trust are also restoring one large house in Cape Charles.

This is a great place for hiking as well over to another section of the community. There is a trail loop that you can take.
