  • Battle Harbour was a very important fishing center and the cod fish are now very rare. You can see from this mural how big these fish once were and now today for a variety of reasons they are rare and fished on a very limited basis.

  • by jamiesno

  • Years ago there was no electricity and the homes were lighted with oil lamps.

Today when you are staying in Battle Harbour I recommend you don't use the electricity today and use the oil lamps for a more traditional and peaceful experience.

It really is an experience, you should try.

Be careful as well with the lamps.

  • Here in this picture in the Isacc Smith Cottage I am relaxing on a Day Bed. These were very common years ago in the living room and kitchen areas and used for resting.

  • Years ago the homes were heated by a wood stove that was also used for cooking.

In line with tradition and the ultimate authentic experience the Isacc Smith Cottage in Battle Harbour is still heated using a traditional wood stove.

If you have a cabin or cottage yourself, you know how cozy wood heat is. If this is a new experience I trust you will enjoy this.

  • Today we have Visa and Mastercard but in the early 1900s in Battle Harbour credit was a little less sophisticated but credit was a common practice.

Today you can view the old books that show the prices of goods, it is amusing to see how much groceries cost one time.

    Local Customs: The Boss's View
  • Tip Rating:
  • Above the General Store you will see to large windows upstairs on one corner of this building.

Here is the view from this room and as you can see it was the ideal perch from which to watch workers that would be on the water front and working at the fishing flakes.

Today this area is occupied by staff people working in Battle Harbour.

    Local Customs: Dog House
  • Tip Rating:
  • Dogs were one Battle Harbour island and teams of dogs were used in many cases for transportation in the winter months.

While walking the paths of Battle Harbour you will see these very hold dog houses. They are small and you may be wondering what they are as you stroll along.

    Local Customs: School Wood Stove
  • Tip Rating:
  • Battle Harbour - Old School in Cape Charles
  • Old School in Cape Charles
  • by jamiesno

  • Today in Battle Harbour the school is missing, there is interpretation at the site however about the school and its remains.

The old school shared by Mathews Cove and Trap Cove is also fallen down.

In Cape Charles there is still an old school as seen in the picture. You can see the old desks and books that were used.

You can also see the pipe coming down from the ceiling that would have been used for the wood stove. I remember hearing plenty of stories of how students had to bring their wood with them to school to keep the firing going especially in the winter months.
