Memories of Bombay

by sha_stallion - last update: Aug 13, 2004

oxen, horses & donkeys are usual on the streets
Bombay's local life

It was my first trip to India, and though I got stomach upset and dehydration, I was somewhat glad that I had a local view of Bombay. Aside from fellow VTer aadil, I would say people are generally much friendlier in Bombay. I must add too that strangers I met in Bombay were not as pushy about tips than those I met in Agra and Fatehpur Sikri. Perhaps Bombay people are generally more metropolitan and comfortable with tourists ; )

This local view, however, included my very first witness of the reality of the slums and vagabonds. I suspect, it was the sight of these that had disturbed my state of health there more than the change in diet and weather itself.
Chowpatty beach from Kamala Nehru Park
Not that I didn't stay in a good-class hotel. I do enjoy the ambience and hospitality of Hotel Heritage where we stayed. But one can't shy away from the sight of street people lying dangerously on the paths of vehicles in India. There are just too many of these people. I suspect these people were once village hopefuls... I pray for their well-being.

Nevertheless on the bright side...
one can also avoid the crowded Mumbai with an escape to Chowpatty beach. Luxury homes align as you ascend Malabar hills for a view.

but most significantly...

Mumbai shall be memorable for me as the place Fazahar & I were solemnised. See Married in Mumbai.
