Islands....

by Anisha1 - last update: Sep 11, 2002

<b>Aran Mor</b> and <b>Tory Island</b> are the two main 'living' islands off our coast. Don't ask me about population, but I know it doubles or trebles in the Summer months. They are well known by mainlanders (that's us), for their all night ceilís (Irish dance) and discos. <BR>
<b>Aran</b> is only 20 minutes by ferry and <b>Tory</b> is double that at least.<BR>
Tory is steeped in <b>Myths</b> and <B>Legends</B>. It still has the ruins of <b>Balor's</b> tower.....what do you mean, you've never heard of "Balor of the evil eye"!!
The craic is only mighty on these islands, My only problem with them is, when I go out there, I never seem to know when to come home.......there's always a later ferry you can catch, and the craic is too good in the pubs to leave.
If you're looking for <i>Accomodation</i> in Aran Mor, Bonners B+B is located just afew hundred yards from the ferry landing point. Phone # 075 20532. Fax # 075 20750 .

There is a hotel in Tory, "Ostan Thorai" : Phone 00353 74 35920.
Some of the B&B phone numbers for you are:
Duffy's 074 35136
Nic Ruairi 074 35512
Nic Fhionntaigh 074 35856
M. Ni Mhianain 074 65005

They are very easy-going. Don't expect anything to be on time.....expect the ferry!!

Aran Mor Ferry timetable is above, click to enlarge.

or <a href="http://www.goireland.about.com/travel/goireland/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http://www.infowing.ie/donegal/index3.html"Aran Mor </a>
Bringing home the catch.
This is <b>Rutland</b> Island, one of the islands you pass on the way to Aran Mor.At one time it was the home of The Cummingham Family who were Landlords here. They established Burtonport as one of the main ports in the 1800's.
Gola Island.
Uninhabited in Winter months. Many take a picnic and a boat trip here in Summer. A nice quiet day out.
This was taken from Cruit Island looking out on Aran Mor.
Arán Mór Lighthouse. It's worth the walk to the lighthouse.

An appropriate word for such an outstanding look at Donegal would be "enchanting". What better word for Eire? Love the photo of Altan Lake.
