This was a spectacular evening. The ambiance alone was worth the trip. The food, cocktails and service were outstanding. The best however was the entertaiment. Local musician "Boom" serenaded us with with his beautiful ukelalee and pure sweet voice. This truly was an amazing experience. His melodious Hawaiian music was a joy, one moment a ballad mesmorizes you then the segue to a rousting island style beat that makes your hips swing before you even realize it.
If you ever have the opportunity, go!

How many times have you read that there are few affordable restaurant choices in Hāna? Well, it's true.

This is why you should pack your lunch if you're doing "The Road to Hāna". Pick up some drinks, sandwiches, and a cooler with ice in Kahului before heading out.

But, if you forgot to do this, you still have a few options. And this one is best, IMHO.

Just after Hāna on the main highway you will pass through a stretch of Cook pines lining the roadway. Keep an eye out for the signs by the road (see pictures). This guy is not always open. But, if he is, you must try his offerings. He opens at 10am and cooks until everything is gone. He says that usually happens around 2 or 3pm.

Since we were staying in Hāna for three nights and we really liked his food, we picked up an extra plate a couple of times to microwave for dinner. Even reheated it tasted good.

Prices were reasonable (as of Oct. '06). Shoyu Chicken: $8. Shoyu Beef: $9. Shoyu Pork: $8. Grilled Mahi: $10. BBQ ribs: $12. Other items are available from time to time. He says the menu varies and depends on what he feels like buying and cooking.

We liked all of the listed items above.

Along with the meat, you get two scoops of white rice, one scoop macaroni salad, and sauted veggies. It's a standard Hawai‘ian plate lunch.

Keep in mind that his servings are large. One order was enough for both my wife and I to share. While I consider myself a big eater and my wife is on the lighter side, there was plenty on just one plate lunch.

And for the squeamish among you who are affraid of eating anything from a roadside vendor like this: The food was very tasty and we were never sickened by any of it.

Lahaina Fish Company: Lahaina Fish Company
  • Tip Rating:
  • Fresh Fish! The majority of the restaurants and hotels import seafood, there are not many that actually get fresh fish from the few sport fishing companies on the island but this is one of them! It's on the water too...wonderful view!

    Fresh Ono!

    Kula Lodge: Kula Lodge
  • Tip Rating:
  • High in the mountain you get a view of the island and the food is fabulous. Our friends lived down the road and they go here often, it seems to change chef's and the food at this time was wonderful. It's a great place to go!!

    Almond encrusted Ono - mouthwatering!
